Congratulations to the Powell Puma Band and Symphonic Band. The combined bands were the first to play Emmy and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Michael Colgrass’ original song, "Mysterious Village". Colgrass was in attendance at the bands’ rehearsal October 11. The bands will perform "Mysterious Village" at the October 30th band concert at Powell Middle School.

Arapahoe sophomore clarinetist Phillip Strom and sophomore tube player Grant Furry have been selected to perform in the 2007 Concordia University Honor Band. The concert will be held at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska on November 3rd.

Arapahoe High Marching Band finished as runners-up in the Class 5A State Championship Oct. 20. In addition, the band placed first at the New Friendship Cup Band Competition on September 22 and was named Grand Champion 1st Place Band. It also placed 1st in music at the Pomona Marching Festival October 7th and 2nd overall and 2nd in the 5A classification. Congratulations, Warriors!

Junior Achievement of Rocky Mountain Incorporated has been named the 2007 Colorado Outstanding Business Volunteer for Congressional District Six by the Colorado Association of Partners in Education. Amber Hall, a business teacher at Littleton High School, nominated Junior Achievement on behalf of Littleton, Arapahoe, Heritage, and Options high schools.

Arapahoe High School Technology Director Karl Fisch has been named to the National School Board Association’s 2007 “20 to Watch” list. The list includes 20 education technology leaders from across the nation who reflect spirit of innovation, creativity, and collaboration in technology education.
Nine LPS students have been named National Merit Semifinalists: John Dickinson, Alexandra Fresch, Robert Newell, David Tetley, Scott Tryggestad, and Douglas Winter from Arapahoe; Claire McKeever from Heritage; and Sydney Stulock and Sharon Wu from Littleton. In addition, Samantha Velez, Arapahoe, was named a Hispanic Scholar; Andrelle Mosby, Littleton, was named an Achievement Scholar; and 32 students representing all three high schools were named Commended Scholars.

Board of Education President Diana Holland received the McGuffey Award for excellence from the Colorado Association of School Boards during the organization's regional meeting Wednesday, October 10.

Littleton High Teacher Kim Race has been chosen as one of three Colorado finalists for the 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching for Secondary Mathematics. Kim is automatically a candidate for the national-level Presidential Award. She and the other two nominees were honored at a ceremony at the Colorado Convention Center last Thursday.


Euclid 6th grade teacher Jen Phillips has been spotlighted in SMART Technologies’ Best Practices Guide. The guide has been circulated in hard copy and is available online, too.

Heritage High revived its Homecoming Parade tradition last Friday, Sept. 28. The parade assembled on South Crocker (ESC) and proceeded down Littleton Boulevard to the end of Main Street.

Seventeen top students from the Arapahoe High School Theatre Arts Department were recently inducted into the International Thespian Society and AHS Troupe #4492. The average student completed over 100 hours in theatre performance and tech work to qualify for this honor.

The Whitman Elementary 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade choir performed the “Star Spangled Banner” at the September 19 Rockies game at Coors Field. The choir was selected through an audition process.

Goddard Middle School gave away its 100th computer last week! The Computers for All program provides donated computers for Goddard families who might not otherwise have a home computer.

Arapahoe High School seniors William Hea and Rob Newell have been awarded the Superior Writing Award by the National Council of Teachers of English. Nearly 2,000 juniors submitted their essays last year, and only five from Colorado received the award. Congratulations, William and Rob!
